- The form that must be completed in order to qualify for any type of governmental financial aid for higher education, such as Pell Grants or PLUS loans. This form must be submitted each summer by a certain deadline to qualify for aid the coming school year. A FAFSA must be submitted for state financial aid as well.
Every year, millions of college students and parents of college students fill out this form. The application process can be fairly rigorous, requiring the disclosure of a great deal of financial information. Applicants must provide their Social Security number, driver's license, tax returns, W-2s, child support, bank statements and investment statements, among other items.
